Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce its first foldable iPhone in 2026, marking its entry into the growing foldable smartphone segment. According to multiple supply chain and industry reports, the company plans to unveil the device, likely named iPhone Fold, as part of the iPhone 18 series in September 2026.
The foldable iPhone is expected to feature a book-style design, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold line, with a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer screen when folded. Sources suggest the device will use a titanium-aluminium frame for durability and flexible LTPO+ OLED panels supplied by Samsung Display.
Design, Features, and Specifications
Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has indicated that Apple may replace Face ID with Touch ID integrated into the side button or under the screen due to limited internal space. The model is also expected to include dual rear cameras and under-display technology for sensors and the front-facing camera.
Pricing estimates for the iPhone Fold range from $2,000 to $2,500, positioning it within the ultra-premium category. A Counterpoint Research report noted that Apple’s launch could reshape the foldable market, stating that the product “will expand consumer awareness and accelerate replacement demand among high-income users.”
Skipping iPhone 19 for 20th Anniversary Edition
Apple is expected to skip the iPhone 19 and move directly to the iPhone 20 in 2027 to mark the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone’s release in 2007. This strategy mirrors the company’s decision to skip the iPhone 9 and introduce the iPhone X for the 10th anniversary in 2017.
According to Omdia Chief Researcher Heo Moo-yeol, Apple will release the iPhone 18e and iPhone 20 in early 2027, followed by the iPhone 20 Pro, Pro Max, iPhone Air, and a second-generation iPhone Fold later that year. The anniversary model is rumoured to feature a bezel-free wraparound display, though this has not been confirmed.
Market Outlook
The U.S. foldable smartphone market is projected to expand by 68% year-over-year in 2025, led by Samsung, followed by Motorola and Google. Analysts believe Apple’s entry in 2026 will significantly increase competition and help foldables transition from a niche category to a mainstream product segment.
