OpenAI buys team behind Workflow and Apple Shortcuts to enhance ChatGPT

OpenAI has announced the acquisition of Software Applications Incorporated, the company behind Sky, an unreleased AI-powered natural language interface built for macOS. The move will bring Sky’s deep macOS integration and design expertise into the ChatGPT ecosystem, with all members of the Sky team joining OpenAI.

Sky was designed as a context-aware AI interface that could understand what appears on a user’s screen and assist with tasks such as writing, coding, or planning directly within macOS windows. The software was never publicly launched but had been previewed earlier this year, showcasing its ability to operate at a system level on Apple devices.

Founded in 2023, Software Applications Incorporated was established by the creators of the Workflow app, later acquired by Apple and developed into Shortcuts, the automation system built into iOS and macOS. The founding team includes Ari Weinstein, Conrad Kramer, and Kim Beverett, a former senior Apple product manager who worked on Safari, Messages, FaceTime, and SharePlay.

Bringing macOS expertise to ChatGPT

Announcing the deal, Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, said the acquisition supports OpenAI’s goal of building AI that integrates directly with users’ daily tools.

“We’re building a future where ChatGPT doesn’t just respond to your prompts, it helps you get things done,” Turley said. “Sky’s integration with the Mac ecosystem moves that vision forward.”

Ari Weinstein, co-founder and CEO of Software Applications Incorporated, said Sky was designed to make computers “more empowering, customisable, and intuitive.” He added that large language models (LLMs) now make it possible to realise that vision, helping users work naturally across their desktop.

Part of OpenAI’s broader desktop strategy

The acquisition follows OpenAI’s recent unveiling of ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered web browser designed to embed ChatGPT into browsing workflows.

By combining Atlas for web-based tasks and Sky for desktop interactions, OpenAI appears to be positioning ChatGPT as a multi-environment assistant capable of managing research, content creation, and system-level actions across platforms.

OpenAI stated that further details about the integration of Sky’s technology into ChatGPT will be shared in the coming months, signalling an expansion of the company’s AI desktop capabilities.
