A U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet from RAF Lakenheath in England has been shot down over Iran on April 3, 2026, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions. According to reports from The War Zone, the aircraft belonged to the 494th Fighter Squadron, deployed to the U.S. Central Command area as part of Operation Epic Fury.

The twin-seat fighter was struck by Iranian air defenses while conducting operations over central Iran. As reported by NBC News, one crew member has been successfully rescued by American forces. However, search and rescue operations remain underway for the second crew member, with concerns about potential capture.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for the downing, initially claiming the aircraft was an F-35 and that a “new type of air defense system” was responsible. However, photographic evidence from wreckage, documented by The War Zone, clearly shows F-15E components including vertical tail sections and distinctive wing parts, confirming the aircraft identification. The incident demonstrates that Iran retains significant air defense capability despite ongoing U.S. operations to degrade these systems.

The Pentagon confirmed the incident hours after Iranian media initially broadcast claims. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that President Trump had been briefed on the situation. This marks the first confirmed downing of a major U.S. fighter aircraft over Iran during the current operation, challenging previous assertions of complete air superiority in the region.

The F-15E Strike Eagle, also known as the Mud Hen, is a highly capable twin-seat fighter-bomber variant that has seen extensive service since the 1980s, including operations in Desert Storm and subsequent Middle Eastern campaigns. The loss of this aircraft, while both crew members represent the priority of search and rescue operations, signals the effectiveness of Iran’s air defense network.

This incident comes amid broader regional tensions, with Iran conducting retaliatory strikes against allied infrastructure in the region. Intelligence assessments indicate that approximately half of Iran’s missile launchers remain operational, with thousands of attack drones still available. The downing of the F-15E underscores that despite superior U.S. military technology, the conflict has reached a new level of intensity.
